Antoine in Wellington

The door opens onto a patio that's full of a huge family working on a barbeque and other things.

There's a view over a city with a horseshoe harbor and a wind that threatens to blow you over if you walk the wrong way.

She doesn't want him getting hurt.

"Ah - I - I think so."

Said with a certain amount of uncertainty.

She gives him a big hug as the food arrives and the waitress grins at them,

"Are you having a good time?"

"Oh yes, I'm showing Antoine who's never been to New Zealand before around."

"First time here, wicked. I hope you're having a good time."

He offers up a quick nod and a smile.

"It's quite different from where I've been used, but it's a pleasant change."

"I'm glad you like it."

"Same here."

The food arrives and Tiwa passes it over so that he can pick out the biggest fish.

He picks out a medium-sized one, eying it with curiosity before starting to eat.

He seems to like it, anyway.

"You can get really good fish here since they catch it right out there. Have to dip it in the tartar sauce."

Fortunately, he cottoned on to the dipping sauce before starting to eat, proving that he does have some degree of competency.

"What kind of fish is it?"

"Um, cod or haddock I think."

"I've never had much fish before."

This is, strictly speaking, true.

"Oh, why not?"

"It wasn't any reason in particular, I think, just how things played out."

"Okay, but just let me know if you want to try something you haven't had before."

"Oh, non, non. I trust your taste - I don't know where I would begin."

"I'll introduce you slowly to some of the odder things then. What do you miss most about France?"

"Consuelo."

It's said softly enough to pass as a whisper, and indeed, he plays it off that way.

"The, ah, sense. It's a very - physical sort of city. Touch, smell, sound, love. The very air is thick."

"Sounds wonderful, must be the kind of place you just soak in."

"You'll find a way back, you've got a good compass."

"I hope you're right."

He smiles over at her, trust apparent in his expression more than anything else.

"Course I am. Now eat up, you're far too skinny."
